Career Success Get In The Zone

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Career Success: Get in “the Zone” What are attributes of the most successful lawyers I coach? Even if you are not a sports fan, you likely would enjoy watching Michael Jordan play in the NBA championship or Wayne Gretsky play in the Stanley Cup Championship. These two great athletes made it look effortless and were at the top of their game when it was needed by their team the most. I loved watching them because they were so focused on what they needed to accomplish. In the book Michael Jordan SpeaksJanet Lowe, Michael explains what it means to be in the zone on the court. Once you get into the moment, you know you’re there. Things start to move slowly, you start to see the court very well. You start reading what the defense is trying to do. And I saw that, I saw that moment. Wayne Gretzky was once asked the difference between a good hockey player and a great one. He reportedly answered:   A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be. What then is the lawyer equivalent of being in the zone? I think first it means being in the moment. The best lawyers I know work when they are working and are focused on what they are doing. For many of us we are so very easily distracted by emails or someone coming in the office to chat about the weekend. What can you do to start 2015, “in the zone?” What is the lawyer equivalent of playing to where the puck is going to be? I think it is anticipating our clients’ needs before they have expressed them. We can really differentiate ourselves from other lawyers when we are looking ahead in that way. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Why not to ask why

Why not to inquire as to why I'm a major fanatic of Simon Sinek's Start With Why TEDTalk and concur that understanding the reason (both yours and others') is significant to progress. However when we're talking throughout regular day to day existence, there are certainly circumstances when the word why toward the beginning of an inquiry isn't your companion. Why puts individuals on the defensive. It will in general seem to be requesting and confrontational. As in, for what reason would you say you are late? and for what reason did you do that? In the event that you will probably request, face and put somebody on the back foot, at that point definitely, why away. At the point when self images are in question or you need to welcome individuals to draw in with you, there are a large group of better choices. At the executive gathering My companion Nora (not her genuine name) is a non-official executive and imparted to me her strategy for expressing worries such that delivers the best result. When the CFO introduced the organization's financial plan at the executive gathering indicating a ten times increment, Nora's previously thought was, The reason would you say you are giving us this hockey stick projection? You're never in a month of Sundays going to make that budget! But how to express that in a helpful manner? She picked the accompanying: How would we realize that a ten times increment can be achieved? And a sane conversation ensued. In the end, it turned out to be obvious to the supervisory group that they expected to return and audit the numbers, yet because of Nora's deft addressing abilities, everybody kept up their respect simultaneously. My undisputed top choice is, What might should be valid with the end goal for us to accomplish that spending plan? Or then again another great route is to ask, What might it take for that to occur? With your mentee At the point when you're coaching somebody, an indication of progress is that they leave your quality inclination better than when they came in. So it's not valuable to cause them to feel awful about themselves despite the fact that they might be coming to you for guidance on the most proficient method to remove themselves from a dubious circumstance. Rather than, Why for heaven's sake did you say that to the customer? there's consistently, What were the conditions that prompted this circumstance? Also, For what reason didn't you put yourself forward for that job? could become What was your point of view for choosing… At the point when you're at home This works shockingly well in my own life also â€" a special reward (or maybe the primary concern?). At the point when our children requested that consent go to an occasion and we weren't amped up for it, it didn't work to ask, For what reason would you need to go to that? or more regrettable yet, For what reason should we let you go? Not just are those inquiries difficult to answer deferentially, they will in general reason a contention. Rather, Would you be able to reveal to us progressively about it? ended up being an increasingly nonpartisan and effective approach to get the data and confirmations we needed. Also, on those uncommon events when relatives are not falling in line and doing precisely what I need them to do when I need them to do it, it's enticing to yell something like, For what reason would you say you are as a rule so difficult? Much as it feels fulfilling to vent, my own experience is that no useful discussion has ever originated from an inquiry like that. Furthermore, blaming another person for being obstinate generally implies I am showing up similarly as difficult from their place of view. It's a predicament. What has worked better for me is to change tack and ask, What might you want to do? Back to Career Mastery At the board level, it's everything about the inquiries you pose, how you express them and how well you tune in to the answers. But why hold up until you're in that rarified air to put this to work? You can begin getting the advantages right currently regardless of what your level. Get the chance to work figuring out how to pose inquiries in a manner that accomplishes your motivation… and with at least guarantee damage. It's an expertise that turns out to be increasingly significant the more senior you become. I'd love to hear how you do with your training. What's more, meanwhile, if it's not too much trouble told us in the remarks below: what are your preferred inquiries? Significant aptitude: pose inquiries that accomplish your motivation with least harm #CareerMastery

Government Shutdown TSA Workers Struggling to Make Ends Meet

Government Shutdown TSA Workers Struggling to Make Ends Meet It's difficult to state what tomorrow will bring for a huge number of Transportation Security Administration representatives directing screenings on voyagers in air terminals around the nation. Be that as it may, it likely won't be a check. Presently, entering its third week, the fractional government shutdown carries a huge money related hit to bureaucratic representatives the nation over who ordinarily anticipate their every other week checks to help make a decent living. Among them are TSA representatives, who are the absolute most reduced paid government laborers and have been working without ensured pay during one of the busiest travel times of the year. These laborers disclose to MONEY that the developing length of the shutdown brings a new rush of tension as some of them get ready for their first payroll interval since the government incompletely shut down on Dec. 22 to come and go, without a check. Most definitely, a great deal of us despite everything live check to check, says Victor Payes, a TSA official situated in Los Angeles who speaks to his partners in his neighborhood section of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) association. It's difficult to design a financial plan for these kinds of emergencies for any all-encompassing timeframe. These TSA laborers are a portion of the 420,000 administrative representatives considered basic and accordingly need to work without pay during the shutdown, with another 380,000 government workers on leave of absence. TSA representatives disclose to MONEY that working without pay has verifiably brought confidence and constrained laborers down to change vacation plans, cut back on presents for these special seasons, and worry about spending on basics like gas, staple goods, and childcare. A few representatives have given driving a shot the side for Uber or Lyft on their TSA work calendar, and others are trusting their banks will permit postponed installments on vehicle and protection bills without included late charges. Moreover, a few representatives have been supposedly phoning in wiped out to discover different gigs where they can make money to more readily deal with these bills, as indicated by a CNN report. In case we're truly discussing the benefit of the individuals, we can't put that sort of weight on them â€" to ensure and serve the voyaging open however then not have the option to deal with their families, says Shekina Givens, a lead transportation security official situated in Atlanta who works in the Local 0554 section of the AFGE association. The fractional shutdown â€" which impacts nine government divisions and many offices and administrative projects â€" came after the Senate didn't pass a spending charge that included $5 billion in financing for a fringe divider that President Donald Trump needs to put along the U.S.- Mexico outskirt, an issue that legitimately includes the Department of Homeland Security, which houses TSA. In the days prior to the halfway government shutdown, Trump said he would be glad to close down the administration for fringe security. On the off chance that it's the divider you're worried about and not your government representatives, a few of us live check to check, and the TSA is as of now one of the most minimal paid bureaucratic organizations, says Juan Casarez, a TSA official of 16 years who is the leader of his neighborhood association section in Arizona. Think about that government laborers have families, he includes. Agents from the White House and TSA didn't react promptly to a solicitation for input. It's hard for TSA representatives to see a conclusion to the shutdown, a few laborers tell MONEY. Today, in a gathering with Congressional pioneers, the president said the shutdown could proceed for quite a long time or even years. On Thursday, the House, under another Democratic larger part, passed an authoritative bundle that would have revived the legislature â€" however Trump took steps to veto the enactment since it did exclude subsidizing for the divider. All things considered, those House bills would revive the Department of Homeland Security just until early February with an end goal to keep the discussion over the proposed outskirt divider alive while, at any rate for the present, giving financing to the office. Regardless of whether this shutdown closes, we're as yet apprehensive that we will be left in the center of this political disturbance, Payes says. Prior this week, AFGE, the biggest association of bureaucratic specialists, reported it documented a claim against the administration over the absence of pay for basic representatives working all through the shutdown. While there is no law requiring these workers to get back compensation after the shutdown closes, verifiably, Congress and the White House has given them it. The Senate passed a bill before the shutdown started in December to guarantee affected government workers would get back compensation, and the Daily Beast reports the White House intends to help back compensation, as well. Notwithstanding, TSA representatives state exploring their funds while working without pay has demonstrated a baffling, troublesome, and exhausting procedure â€" one that debilitates the attract to working for the central government. The government ought to be a model boss, and when you have representatives coming to work and saying, 'Hello, we don't have the foggiest idea when we'll pay you,' that doesn't set an extraordinary norm, Payes, the Los Angeles-based TSA official, says. Toward the day's end, we're simply attempting to carry out our responsibility, he includes. We'd preferably not have any interruption instituted. Have your accounts or every day life been influenced by the administration shutdown? We need to hear your story. Email us at money_letters@moneymail.com or disclose to us how in the remarks underneath.

Underperforming New Hires Its Probably Your Fault

Underperforming New Hires It’s Probably Your Fault Businesses spend a lot of money hiring, onboarding, and training new employees. It’s a substantial investment of time and finances for the company. Each time an organization hires a new employee, it costs them thousands of dollars. With such a large investment, what happens when the new hires are underperforming or not meeting business expectations? A good place to start is by looking at the hiring process. It’s often found the failure of new hires falls on the employer, and for many reasons. Let’s dive into a few reasons why new hires are underperforming. Hiring Too Fast A lot of businesses only hire when they have an immediate role to be filled. While that’s an obvious reason to find a new employee, it’s a best practice to hire before you are in dire need. Too often, when a role needs to be filled quickly, the hiring process is rushed and therefore “red flags” or signs of a cultural misfit aren’t always clear or brought to light. Whether the hiring team is rushing through interviews or skipping background checks, moving too quickly through the hiring process doesn’t allow the company to learn everything they need to about the candidate. The same is true for the candidate as well. If they aren’t given enough time to ask their questions and get a sense of what it’s like to work for the company, there could be a cultural or job-fit misalignment. Soft Skills vs. Hard Skills Hiring teams should focus on hiring employees based on their potential success, instead of focusing on their previous success. Concentrating on soft skills traits like leadership, cooperation, empathy, drive, openness, abstract thinking, and more, will allow you to better align the candidate with your team. So how do you hire for soft skills? Psychometric assessments will help you understand the valuable soft skills that your candidates bring to the table. By looking at their soft skills, you can compare them to the company and the teams they will be on. This allows the hiring manager to make more informed decisions when it comes to hiring new candidates and selecting which ones match the company needs. Roles Within a Team If a new hire doesn’t understand what their role is on a team, they are going to become disengaged, leading to poor performance or possibly even a decision to leave the company. If they know how they impact and benefit the team, business, and its outcomes, they are going to be successful, simply due to them having a sense of purpose and belonging. No Real Onboarding Another factor that leads to new hires not working out is that they weren’t taken through an onboarding process. An onboarding process can vary from company to company, but having one is paramount. GoodCo Pro users are able to provide their candidates with an Onboarding Report. This report gives them a sense of what it’s like to work with their managers and other teammates by showing them which skills they possess and how their own skills compliment them. Candidates using this report feel more confident because they understand how to work better with their teams, as the report explains how to best work with each individual. Not only does an onboarding process set new hires up for success, but it is also an early indicator of what it’s going to be like working at your company. This is the perfect time for hiring teams to instill the company values and begin showing the new hire why accepting the position was a great idea. Bad Fit It’s usually an oversight of the employer when a candidate isn’t successful. However, there are instances where it’s not. It’s been found that roughly 85% of employers have caught candidates lying on their resumes. If candidates have misrepresented their experience or skills, it’s definitely not the fault of the employer. It’s important to ask questions about the candidates resume during the interview to catch any misrepresentations. If you have gone through all of the steps to ensure the candidate was a perfect match, you onboarded and trained them properly, and it still doesn’t work out, sometimes, but very rarely, candidates are just unable to integrate into your culture and team, and that’s something unpreventable. At that moment, it’s time to move on and use the tools that have allowed you to hire successful candidates in the past again. Ensuring That Your Resume Is Format CorrectWhen it comes to resume formatting, you need to be sure that your resume is clear and succinct. Your job description should be crystal clear to anyone reading it that what you are looking for is a job and not just the opportunity to get in your way.Make sure that your resume is laid out in a logical order. It should follow a particular sequence of events as they should be laid out in your job description. Apply to the next job position you find. Sooner or later, you will get hired. Be effective at networking. Know that having the right connections works to your advantage. Get to know people who can connect you to the kind of jobs or companies you want to work for. Friends, family, or even acquaintances can always be of help. In addition, make sure that you also make use of virtual networking by having an online presence in recognized social media sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, to name a few. Furthermore, have an active account on sites that specialize in connecting employees to employers â€" such as uk.jobrapido.com â€" where many job offers are posted according to location, company, or industry. Be updated. If you have been out of the work scene for quite some time, expect to be quite rusty when it comes to some things. It would be great to get your skills polished or upgraded. Learn some new skills if you can, especially when you know the nature of work you want. Doing so works well to your advantage as it immediately refreshes your qualifications. Be prepared. Make sure that you make the necessary research regarding your target companies. Know substantial information regarding the company, how it will benefit you, as well as how you would be an asset to them. Being informed and prepared once you get to be interviewed will leave a positive impression on potential employers. Be open to opportunities. If a job offer isn’t exactly what you were hoping for and you refuse to even consider it, you might be losing a valuable opportunity. A lot of people start somewhere before reaching their dream career. When a job posting comes up, consider how it can work towards achieving your career goals. If you believe that it can be a good start to paving your way to a better future, grab the chance. It might be the one that will lead you to the next step. Job hunting is never an easy task. You can get frustrated after sending in hundreds of applications. You might also feel inadequate. Know your weaknesses and correct your mistakes so you build a better you somebody that can be seen as a strong asset to the kind of company you want to work for. Establish positive connections with people who can help you get that job. And when you get to be where you want to be, never forget to look back and extend a helping hand. Somewhere, someone would also be going through the same situation you had before. Image credits. Main.  Offer.

Who Says Its a Mans World

Who Says It’s a Man’s World QA with author Emily Bennington Emily Bennington describes herself as a career author, speaker and space invader. Not the kind with ray guns (although, to be fair, I didnt ask to see them, so she may be that kind, too.) She’s talking about what Stephen Covey referred to in his writing: “between stimulus and response there is a space, and it’s in that space you choose how you wish to respond.” Bennington has written two books and has been featured in media such as CNN, ABC, and Fox to the Wall Street Journal, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan. I spoke to her about her latest book Who Says It’s a Man’s World: The Girls’ Guide to Corporate Domination.   CM: Who Says It’s a Man’s World is full of good career advice for just about anyone.   Why did you think it was important to write it specifically for women? EB: I think the book is for anyone who wants to excel at work and still enjoy the journey.   In my experience, women have a little more trouble making that work.   I know I had trouble balancing my ambition with the rest of my life.   As a woman in my twenties, I gravitated to the career section of every bookstore â€" it drew me like a magnet.   I spent my youth absorbing all the career advice I could get my hands on.   I was checking off boxes on the success to-do list, but achieving my goals wasn’t the same as being happy. I was burning out.   I wanted to have a career I loved and live a life that made me happy too. CM: What changed your path? EB: I discovered the Self Help section of the bookstore in my thirties, and spent the next few years reading about how you must learn to be grateful for what you have before you can get more. After a while, I decided to figure out how to be more ambitious and more grateful.   I wrote this book for career women who have business books on their desks and self-help books on their nightstands. CM: Did you discover what worked? EB: I discovered what worked for me.   Like many people, I spent my time living four or five years into the future. You know how that goes: “I’ll be happy when I get that raise (or promotion, or new assignment, or lose ten pounds…)” I was delaying happiness, delaying starting my own life.   I was in constant competition with everyone, trying to get what they had â€" reverse engineering their happiness to try to get some for myself. Finally, the last straw was the day I was getting my (then) three and four-year old children ready for school.   They were dawdling and fighting me in the way only toddlers can, when I burst into tears.   I yelled at them, “You’re turning me into somebody I don’t want to be!”   I realized in that moment that I could choose what and how I wanted to be.   The results of my journey got rolled into this book. CM: How did you change your approach to life? EB: First, I stopped being focused on goals (those distant future checkpoints.)   I discovered Benjamin Franklin’s list of 13 virtues that he adopted as a way of life.   His approach changed my life â€" it’s as if the clouds opened, and I saw clearly what would work for me.   I restructured my approach to include Virtues as the foundation of who I am â€" what I focus on being.   Then I work on Intentions â€" the things I do every day, in the present moment, in order to live my core values. For instance, one of my Virtues is “put family first.”   I can easily see in any given day if I am living up to that by the choices I make. Only about a third of my energy is spent on my Goals.   I believe that if you spend time on Virtues and Intentions, the goals you set for yourself will eventually work out.   I recommend that you spend 70 percent of your time pursuing Virtues and Intentions and 30 percent of your time on Goals. For those of you still focused on ambition, dont panic tha t’s one third of your life. I’m not going soft on kicking butt â€" I’m just tethering your actions to things that matter in the here and now. Next post: Virtues, Intentions and Goals â€" how you can re-structure your life.

Motivation Monday Create the Right Day

Motivation Monday Create the Right Day Monday can be a difficult day if you dont like your job or you are in job search. Theres the dread of having to go someplace where you either dont like the work you are doing and/or the people you work with. For job seekers, theres the uneasiness of not having a routine and feeling like you are flying without a net. Let today be the day you take back control! Your Emotions Drive Your Thinking Can you take control? Maybe not of other people, but you can take control of how they make you feel! Are you angry at a lazy coworker? Are you pissed at your manager for not giving you a raise that was promised? Are you feeling like there are no opportunities for advancement? Are you generally mad that you arent getting responses when you apply for jobs? The next time you feel any of these things, ask yourself thisWhat can I do to change this situation? If you are happy being a cog in a wheel then stop reading right now. Choices When you ask yourself that question, is your first response nothing? That simply cant be true. You always have choices. For example, you could chose to ignore your emotions. You could chose to start looking for a new job. You could chose to meet with the person and have a discussion about the changes you would like to propose. Basically, you could chose to do something differently. Disregard the things you have tried in the past. Start today with a fresh outlook. Maybe you did try to remedy the situation in the past and it didnt work THEN. Try it a different way NOW! Self Leadership Self leadership means you are taking steps to continually develop yourself and others. You are equally focused on positive outcomes for both. It means that you know you are a work in progress and you continually seek opportunities to grow and improve. Self leadership also means that you value integrity and respect relationships with others. The people you know that are leaders (real leaders, not managers), are curious, kind, solution-seekers. Changing Start today off differently. Listen to your favorite music. (Sounds simple, but try it!) Take a 20 minute walk Switch it up Email an old friend you havent spoken to in awhile Meditate Slowly eat a healthy breakfast Ride your bike to work Do one act of random kindness Watch Steve Jobs address Stanford University in his commencement address What can you do differently to change the ripple of your day?

Career Transition There Is No GPS Make Your Own Roadmap!

Career Transition There Is No GPS â€" Make Your Own Roadmap! Career Transition There Is No GPS â€" Make Your Own Roadmap A recent Gallup poll revealed that, nationally, 70 percent of U.S. workers are either non-engaged or actively disengaged. A good percent of of those workers are initiating a career transition. Are you taking control of your next career move or are you waiting for it to happen to you? Career transitions come in many varieties: Changing functional roles, e.g. from sales to marketing or finance to operations, Changing industries, e.g. from high-tech to manufacturing or from a for-profit company to a non-profit, Changing companies: moving from your current company to another firm, Changing divisions within your company, And many more! There is no book, website, or video to guide you through the steps you need to take to get to your goal. However, there are key strategies to success; a combination of things to do and NOT to do. Don’t quit your job. No matter how frustrated you may be, do not quit, threaten to leave, or show signs of “short-timer’s disease.” And you will feel “short timer” signs immediately after you make up your mind that you want a change. It manifests itself by little things like having more closed door conversations, showing up later than normal, or leaving early. Don’t tell anybody you work with. There are no secrets around the office and you don’t want a manager thinking that you are uncommitted. Any slip-up can jeopardize the results of an upcoming review, a potential promotion, or a special assignment. Oh, and don’t use any company resources, including your company PC, to research or make connections. Spend hours researching your desired next move. Too many career-changers wing it! Jonathan asked, “Here is my résumé. What do you think I should do next?” Or Leslie said, “I want to leverage my background in blah, blah, blah, and find a challenging position working with great people.” Really? Have you done any research at all? Make your career transition Job #1… outside of your day job, if you are employed. If you are unemployed, there is NO excuse for not dedicating a minimum of 30 hours per week on your Job #1. If you are working, check out the excuses you give yourself for not spending hours working on your next move. Wake up earlier, go to a coffee shop or library during your lunch break, and work on it at night. Be disciplined. Put times and tasks on your calendar and make progress! Document everything you learn in a file on your home computer or in a good old-fashioned binder… whatever works for you. Network face-to-face. Find great events in your local Business Journal (either printed or online) or in LinkedIn groups. Share your goal and seek advice and guidance. Learn how others made a career transition or what they would recommend you examine. Always bring personal business cards to networking events, NOT your company cards. Follow up with everybody you meet so you can build 2-way relationships, don’t just “use” them. Nobody cares about your next career step more than you do. So what are you waiting for? Don’t be a victim, do something to take control and make a change!. I value your comments. What is preventing you from taking charge of your career? What are some of your obstacles? Or what tricks have you used to get un-stuck? Comment below!

Predictive Analytics and Your Career

Predictive Analytics and Your Career While not new, predictive analytics is an important factor in assessing a candidate’s fit and potential. What is new is its accelerating use in corporate America as a means to filter candidates in and out of consideration long before any personal assessment is made. Lou Adler Lou Adler is a regular contributor to LinkedIn and has so much experience and authority in his perspective on the hiring process that it is worth taking the time to understand what he says about the way Big Brother is Now Determining Your Hirability. Today, a person seeking a position is filtered by all that is in their resume, and all that is in their online brand as well. Theres a list of characteristics that fit into a pattern; the pattern of the Achiever. Here is what the Achiever Pattern that many companies look for consists of: lower turnover with growing responsibility quality of the years of experience rather than number of years quickly being assigned (or volunteering) for important projects and/or teams demonstrating same patterns of initiative responsibility in every position rehiring and being rehired by past co-workers participation in expanding cross-functional teams Why Are Certain Qualities Desirable? If you look at the Achiever Patterns overall impression, you see someone who is willing and able to work within any setting and maximize the potential. They are good to work with, as evidenced by the fact they hire past co-workers and are hired by people who have worked with them in the past. Theres a pattern there of more than a self-centered trampling on the way to a shinier inflated ego the achievement they consistently reach is an achievement that is good for everyone. If you dont have these qualities, you may be filtered out of the running before you ever get to the interview. It may be a good idea to carefully look at your resume and online presence and see how accurately they are portraying your own achievements. LinkedIn profile development has never been more important than it is today because it reveals a pattern that your next employer uses to predict your hirability.
